RHODODENDRUM SPUR – Gallipoli Series
OIL on canvas stretcher 12 oz
Inspired after a visit to Gallipoli this very large work has subtle shadows of soldiers behind trees and through the landscape. This position is where the New Zealand army were ordered to advance without firing a shot. They could only use their bayonets. This came with tragic outcome but unbelievably the brave New Zealanders eventually did capture the trench for a day and then it was lost again soon after when they had a rest. This sacrifice of men for what? The so called ANZAC spirit leaves me pondering.
